Soup Kitchen does two things well. During the day the ground floor is a relaxed café-bar – decent coffee, food that’s better than it needs to be, and a crowd of NQ regulars who treat it like a second living room. But the real action is downstairs. The basement is a proper little club space that’s been hosting some of Manchester’s best underground nights for over a decade.
The programming is broad and that’s the strength. You’ll get hip hop one night, techno the next, grime, jungle, disco – whatever the promoters bring. The room is dark, low-ceilinged, and loud. Capacity is small enough that every night feels packed without being uncomfortable. The sound system is solid for the size and the DJs tend to be people who actually care about what they’re playing.
Door prices are usually reasonable and drinks won’t ruin you. The crowd is a genuine mix – music heads, students, NQ locals, people who’ve stumbled in and stayed. Door policy is relaxed but they keep numbers tight because the basement can’t take more. Spear Street location puts you in the middle of the Northern Quarter so there’s always somewhere to go before or after. One of the NQ’s essential nights out.
