Hulme has had more lives than most neighbourhoods. The Crescents of the 1970s were the largest public housing scheme in Europe and became notorious, then got demolished and rebuilt in the 1990s. What's there now is a genuinely mixed community with a strong creative streak. Niamos on Chichester Road is the former Nia Centre, a Black arts hub being restored and re-opened by the community. Hulme Hippodrome, a Frank Matcham music hall, sits nearby awaiting rescue. Zion Arts Centre on Stretford Road runs theatre, dance and community projects. Kim by the Sea, a little bar on Royce Road, is a neighbourhood favourite. Junction 2 Hulme on Jackson's Lane keeps a proper community pub feel. Hulme Park is one of the biggest new city-centre green spaces built in the last twenty years. Walk north and you're in town in ten minutes, south and you're in Moss Side and then the universities.
