Spinningfields

Spinningfields is Manchester's financial and legal quarter, built on land next to the River Irwell between Deansgate and the John Dalton Street conservation area. The site takes its name from a former textile mill, and was redeveloped from the early 2000s by the property company Allied London into the city's main hub for banks, law firms and professional services offices. The development replaced a run-down area of car parks and light industry with a grid of new office towers, public squares and ground floor restaurants, and it remains one of the largest single regeneration projects in the city centre. The centrepiece public space is Hardman Square, flanked by Hardman Street and The Avenue, a pedestrianised strip lined with restaurant and bar frontages that forms the main dining destination within the district. No. 1 Spinningfields is the tallest office tower on the site. On the riverside edge, overlooking the Irwell towards Salford, sits the Manchester Civil Justice Centre, a distinctive cantilevered glass building that houses the region's civil and family courts, and the People's History Museum, the national museum of the history of British democracy and working-class movements, housed partly in a former Edwardian pumping station on the Left Bank. Spinningfields functions primarily as a daytime working district for the thousands of legal, financial and corporate staff based here, but it also carries an evening economy built around its restaurant strip. 20 Stories, a rooftop restaurant and bar on the twentieth floor of one of the office towers, is one of the better-known dining destinations in this part of the city, with wraparound views back across the city centre. The district sits within easy walking distance of Deansgate, Manchester Cathedral and the Museum of Science and Industry in Castlefield, and is served by Deansgate railway station and the Deansgate-Castlefield Metrolink stop, both a short walk to the south. Architecturally, Spinningfields is unusual for central Manchester in being an almost entirely twenty-first century district, built to a single masterplan rather than accumulated over centuries like the areas around it. This gives it a different character to the Victorian warehouse streets of Ancoats or the older commercial core around King Street, with wider pavements, more open squares and a cluster of contemporary glass-fronted towers. The riverside walkway along the Irwell connects the district to Salford, with views across to Salford Central and the older buildings of Chapel Street. For visitors, Spinningfields is best understood as two things: a working financial and legal district by day, with limited independent retail beyond the office-facing chains, and a restaurant and bar destination by evening, concentrated on The Avenue and Hardman Street. The People's History Museum on its edge is free to enter and one of the more distinctive cultural attractions in this part of the city centre, worth visiting on its own merits rather than as an afterthought to the office district around it. The Civil Justice Centre, while not open to casual visitors beyond its public court business, is one of the more architecturally striking modern buildings in Manchester and is often noted for its cantilevered upper floors overhanging the river.
