Federal is one of those places that punches so far above its weight it’s almost unfair. This tiny brunch and coffee spot on Nicholas Croft in the Northern Quarter has been a staple for years, and the quality never dips. The coffee comes from Heart & Graft, roasted locally, and it’s consistently some of the best you’ll find in the city. Flat whites are textbook. Pour-overs are available if you want to geek out. The baristas actually care, which makes a difference.
The brunch menu is compact but every dish delivers. Shakshuka is the standout – rich, spiced tomato sauce with perfectly runny eggs and sourdough for dipping. The corn fritters are crispy and generous, and the granola is made in-house. Seating is limited, so expect a wait at weekends, but tables turn over fairly quickly. The space is bright, clean, and has a relaxed Antipodean feel that fits the NQ perfectly. Federal proved that Manchester could do specialty coffee and all-day brunch as well as anywhere, and it’s still one of the best at it.
