Rusholme's stretch of Wilmslow Road is simply called the Curry Mile and it's been the centre of Manchester's South Asian dining since the 1950s. The neon signs are bigger than anywhere else in the city, Arabic and Urdu sit next to English on shopfronts, and the smell of charcoal grills drifts across the pavement every night. Mughli is the flagship these days, famous for dry-aged chops and a tandoor turning out lamb ribs that have been copied across the country. This & That round the corner in the NQ started here. Kabana, Al Bilal, and Sanam are the institutions. Sweet Mart and Ambala sell barfi and jalebi by the kilo. Rusholme is also the route to Platt Fields Park and the Whitworth Art Gallery, and it sits right on the bus corridor from Piccadilly to Fallowfield so most nights it runs 24 hours. Ramadan in Rusholme is the best time to visit, the street comes alive after sunset and iftar tables line the pavement.
