Skof sits on Blossom Street in Ancoats and is the first solo project from Tom Barnes, who spent years as head chef at Simon Rogan’s L’Enclume in Cumbria. It picked up a Michelin star quickly and held it – not a surprise to anyone who’s eaten there. The cooking is modern British, built around a tasting menu that runs eight to ten courses depending on the season. Produce is sourced carefully, technique is precise, and nothing on the plate is there for decoration alone. The room is calm and unfussy, which lets the food do the work.

Booking is essential and fills up weeks in advance, so plan ahead if you want a table. The wine list is well put together and the team are knowledgeable without being overbearing. Skof has quickly become one of the best reasons to eat out in Manchester – not just in Ancoats, but anywhere in the city. For a special occasion or just to eat something genuinely exceptional, this is the place.
