Cottonopolis takes the Japanese-inspired bar concept and runs it through a Manchester filter. The result is somewhere that feels polished without being cold, stylish without being intimidating. Newton Street isn’t the busiest part of the Northern Quarter which gives it a slightly tucked-away quality — you have to mean to come here rather than stumble in.
The cocktail menu is where the Japanese influence really shows. Sake-based drinks, yuzu, shiso, Japanese whisky — the ingredients are specific and the execution is sharp. The bartenders clearly know what they’re doing and the presentation is clean without crossing into Instagram-bait territory. Prices reflect the quality — expect to pay more than the average NQ bar, but the drinks justify it.
Food follows the same theme with sushi, small plates, and sharing boards that work well alongside the drinks. The sashimi is fresh and the gyoza are worth ordering every time. It’s not a restaurant that happens to serve cocktails — both sides of the menu hold their own.
The space is split across two floors with different moods. Downstairs is darker and more intimate, upstairs has more light and energy. Weekend bookings are recommended. It draws a crowd that appreciates the detail — you won’t find stag dos here, and that’s by design.
