Castlefield Manchester – Canal Locks, Roman Forts and Craft Beer

Castlefield has the Roman fort foundations, the canal locks, the outdoor arena and several bars with proper outdoor terraces. It earns its reputation.

Castlefield sits at the southern edge of the city centre, tucked behind Deansgate and bordered by the canals and railway viaducts that defined Manchester’s industrial peak. It’s one of the best examples of industrial heritage done well in any British city – the Roman fort footings are exposed and visible, the canal basins have been kept rather than filled, and the Victorian warehouse architecture has been converted into flats and bars without being sanitised beyond recognition.

01 Roman

The Roman Fort

Mamucium – the Roman fort that gave Manchester its name – was built around 79 AD where the rivers Medlock and Irwell meet. The reconstructed gateway and granary foundations visible in Castlefield are worth ten minutes even if you’re not a Roman history enthusiast. The Manchester Museum has the finds; the site has the scale. Between the two you get a real sense of why the Romans chose this particular spot on the northwest frontier.

02 Canal

The Canal Basins

The Castlefield Canal Basin is where the Bridgewater Canal – the first true canal of the Industrial Revolution – meets the city. The basin has been cleaned up significantly since the 1980s and the towpaths here are pleasant walking. The architecture above the water is genuinely impressive: Victorian railway viaducts and warehouses at a scale that makes you understand what the city was doing at its peak.

03 Bars

Bars and Outdoor Terraces

Castlefield has some of Manchester’s best outdoor drinking. The canal-side bars run terraces from spring to autumn and get genuinely busy on any dry day. Dukes 92 is the established choice – set in converted stables in the canal basin, pizza and bar food, terrace right on the water. The Wharf and Barca nearby compete for the same outdoor crowd. None of them are cheap but the setting earns the prices on a good evening.

04 Outdoor

The Outdoor Arena

Castlefield Bowl is Manchester’s outdoor music venue – a natural amphitheatre in the canal basin that hosts concerts from spring through summer. It’s one of the better outdoor venue setups in the country: the Victorian railway viaducts form a natural surround, the acoustics work, and standing in the bowl on a warm evening with a band you actually want to see is one of Manchester’s best experiences.
