Private White V.C. – Salford-Made British Outerwear Since 1853

Private White V.C. is one of British fashion’s quiet treasures and one of Manchester’s. The factory on Cottenham Lane in Salford has been making outerwear since 1853. The current brand, revived in 2011 by Mike Stoll and bringing in design direction from Nick Ashley (son of Laura), continues the manufacturing tradition while building international reputation. Prices are serious (£500-1,500 typical) and the quality justifies it. The peak of British-made outerwear and a Manchester treasure.

The Heritage

The 1853 origins

The Cottenham Lane factory in Salford was built in 1853 to manufacture military and civilian outerwear. The building has operated as a clothing factory continuously since then, making it one of the longest-operating clothing manufacturing sites in the UK.

The military heritage

The factory supplied British military uniforms across multiple conflicts. The brand’s name comes from Private Jack White VC, who won the Victoria Cross in WWI and worked at the factory. The military and outdoor heritage informs the brand’s product line today.

The Cooke family era

The Cooke family operated the factory from the early 20th century. Production through the mid-20th century included military contracts, outerwear for traditional UK retailers, and white-label manufacturing for major brands.

The 2011 revival

Mike Stoll, then a member of the family business, took over the factory and launched the modern Private White V.C. brand in 2011. Initial design direction from Nick Ashley brought a contemporary perspective to the heritage manufacturing capability.

The Manufacturing

Made in Salford

Every Private White V.C. garment is made in the Cottenham Lane factory by hand. The Manchester-made label is genuine. Most British fashion brands now manufacture overseas. Private White V.C. is one of the few brands at any price point that genuinely makes everything in the UK.

The machinery

The factory uses traditional industrial sewing machines, some dating from the mid-20th century. Modern computer-controlled machinery is used where appropriate but the construction methods are recognisable from the brand’s heritage era.

The makers

The factory employs approximately 20-30 makers, many with decades of experience. The skill base is genuine British outerwear manufacturing expertise that exists in very few places now.

The cloth

Private White V.C. uses ventile cotton (the technical fabric originally developed for WWII flight suits), waxed cotton from British mills, Harris Tweed for some collections, plus contemporary technical fabrics. The cloth selection emphasises British and European mill sourcing.

The Product Line

The wax jackets

The brand’s signature category. Heavy waxed cotton field jackets, lined with cotton or quilted, often with leather collar trim. £500-850 typical. The kind of jacket that wears in over decades and develops genuine character.

The ventile parkas

The technical heritage piece. Ventile cotton (densely woven cotton that becomes water-resistant when wet) parkas in military-influenced cuts. £700-1,200 typical.

The peacoats

Wool peacoats with the brand’s characteristic sharp tailoring. £695-895 typical.

The Harrington jackets

The contemporary lighter-weight jackets. £400-650 typical.

The bags and small leather goods

Smaller range of bags, wallets, accessories made in collaboration with British leather producers.

The Factory Shop

Cottenham Lane, Salford

The factory shop on Cottenham Lane is open by appointment only. Visits typically 30-60 minutes. The factory tour option (when offered) is genuinely fascinating for anyone interested in British manufacturing.

Booking

Via the Private White V.C. website. Walk-ins not accepted. Lead time typically 1-2 weeks for popular periods.

What to expect

Smaller than the website range typically. Factory seconds occasionally available at discount. The opportunity to handle the construction of the garments and ask the makers questions.

The factory tour

When offered, the factory tour walks through the construction process from cloth selection through cutting, sewing, finishing. Roughly 90 minutes. Photography sometimes restricted depending on current production. Worth attending if it’s available.

Why Private White V.C. Matters for Manchester

Three things. First, the manufacturing legacy. Private White V.C. is one of the very few British clothing brands genuinely manufacturing at scale in the UK. The skill base, the machinery, the craft tradition all live on Cottenham Lane in Salford. Second, the heritage credibility. The brand provides Manchester fashion with serious British manufacturing credentials in a way that the modern e-commerce brands cannot. Third, the international profile. Private White V.C. is internationally known among premium menswear and outerwear customers, putting Manchester on the global premium fashion map.

How to Wear Private White V.C.

The investment piece

Private White V.C. pieces are designed to wear for 10-20+ years. The wax jackets in particular develop genuine patina with use. Buy one, wear it constantly, recondition the wax annually, see it through multiple seasons.

The British casual aesthetic

The brand sits in the broader British casual aesthetic alongside Universal Works, Folk, Albam, Drake’s. Pair with denim, considered knitwear, leather brogues or considered trainers.

The reproofing

Wax jackets need reproofing every 1-2 years. Private White V.C. offers a reproofing service for their jackets. £30-60 typical, returns the wax to original condition.

The repairs

The factory offers repair services for any Private White V.C. garment. Worth knowing if you’re investing in a piece you intend to wear for decades.
