Best Modelling Agencies in Manchester – The 2026 Guide

Manchester’s modelling industry punches above its size for two reasons. The Boohoo Group needs constant volume of e-commerce models for Boohoo, PrettyLittleThing and Nasty Gal. The BBC and ITV at MediaCityUK pull commercial and presenter casting north. Together they support a deep agency scene that genuinely competes with London for non-runway work, plus a healthy commercial and lifestyle market that doesn’t exist in most UK cities.

This is the proper guide. Legitimate agencies, how to apply, what they actually want, and the warning signs of scam operations.

Major Manchester Agencies

Boss Model Management

Manchester’s longest-established major agency. Books for editorial, commercial, e-commerce, runway. Strong relationships with Boohoo, PLT, plus international clients. Books male, female and non-binary talent. Application via the Boss Models website with photos and measurements.

Best for: Established commercial and editorial work, full agency representation

Application: Online via official site, monthly open castings

Nemesis Models

Major Manchester agency with strong commercial and editorial book. Multiple divisions covering main board, plus-size, mature, kids and family. Application via the Nemesis website.

Best for: Diverse commercial work, multiple specialisms

J’Adore Models

Established Manchester agency with strong relationships across Boohoo Group and major UK retail. Female-focused with growing male and kids divisions.

Best for: E-commerce, retail commercial, female-focused work

Tuesday’s Child

Specialist kids and family agency based in Manchester. Books children, teens, families and lifestyle work. Application requires parent consent and recent photos.

Best for: Children, teens, family work

Industry People

Manchester agency covering background artists, dancers, presenters and commercial models. Strong TV and BBC connections.

Best for: Commercial, TV, lifestyle, dance and movement work

Specialist Agencies

Plus-size specifically

Most major Manchester agencies (Boss, Nemesis, J’Adore) have plus-size divisions. The plus-size market in Manchester is one of the busiest in the UK because of the Boohoo Plus and PLT Curve volume.

Mature and silver

Nemesis and Boss both have mature divisions. Strong demand from commercial and lifestyle clients aged 50-70+. Less competitive entry than mainstream divisions.

Real People casting

Manchester has a strong real people casting scene for commercials and lifestyle work. Industry People and Boss both run real people books. Less stringent on traditional model standards, more focused on character and authenticity.

Sports and fitness models

Several Manchester agencies maintain sports and fitness divisions. Useful for sportswear campaigns, gym brand work, lifestyle athletic shoots.

Mother agency arrangements

Several smaller Manchester agencies act as mother agencies, scouting talent and placing them with London or international agencies for the bigger work. Useful entry route for younger or beginning models.

How to Apply to a Manchester Agency

What to send

  • 3-5 natural photos: clear face shot, full body shot, side profile, smiling photo, walking shot
  • No professional headshots needed (and often counterproductive)
  • No makeup or minimal makeup
  • Plain background, good natural light, neutral clothing
  • Current measurements (height, bust/chest, waist, hips, shoe size, dress size)
  • Date of birth and contact details
  • Brief intro about yourself

What NOT to send

  • Heavily edited or filtered photos
  • Heavy makeup or hair styling
  • Group photos with friends
  • Selfies in low light or bad angles
  • Bikini or underwear photos (these are inappropriate at application stage)
  • Photos older than 6 months

Online application vs open castings

Most major agencies prefer online applications via their official websites. Open castings (where they exist) are advertised on Instagram and the agency websites. Don’t turn up unannounced – it doesn’t impress agencies and you’ll be turned away.

What happens if accepted

The agency will invite you for a meeting (always at the agency’s office, never anywhere else). They’ll discuss representation, take their own polaroids, may book you for a test shoot. Reputable agencies do not charge fees for joining, photo shoots, portfolio creation or any form of training.

Industry Standards and Categories

Editorial / fashion

The runway and high-fashion editorial standard. Strict on height (typically 5’9″+ female, 6’0″+ male), measurements, age (16-22 starting). Most editorial bookings still go to London or international agencies, but Boss and Nemesis place editorial talent regularly.

Commercial

The largest Manchester market. Less stringent height requirements (5’5″+ female, 5’9″+ male typically). Range of ages. Strong demand. This is where most working Manchester models actually earn.

E-commerce

Boohoo, PLT, ASOS, Boohoo MAN, etc. Body type fits the product, less personality-driven, high volume work. Day rates lower than editorial but bookings are frequent.

Plus-size

Sizes 14-22 typically. Manchester is one of the strongest plus-size markets in Europe because of the Boohoo Plus and PLT Curve volume.

Real people / lifestyle

Authentic everyday looks for commercial and lifestyle clients. Less competitive entry, often the route to commercial work for non-traditional model types.

Mature

50+. Growing market driven by lifestyle and silver demographic advertising. Less competitive than mainstream divisions.

Kids and family

Age 0-16 typically. Specialist agencies (Tuesday’s Child) lead this category.

Day Rates and Income

Test shoots and portfolio work

Often unpaid (TFP – test for portfolio). Standard early-career, builds the book.

E-commerce day rates

£150-400 typically for new models, £400-800 for established models. Long days, multiple looks.

Commercial day rates

£500-2,000 for commercial print and online campaigns. Established models with strong books earn more.

Editorial day rates

£200-1,000+ depending on publication. The book matters more than the rate.

TV commercial day rates

£500-3,000 for filming day plus usage and repeat fees.

Agency commission

Standard 20% on all work booked through the agency.

How to Spot Modelling Scams

Manchester has a healthy share of scam operations alongside the legitimate agencies. Warning signs:

Upfront fees

Reputable agencies do not charge to join. Anyone asking for joining fees, portfolio fees, photo shoot fees, training fees, registration fees is operating a scam.

Compulsory in-house photography

Reputable agencies use industry-standard photographers. Operations that require you to use their in-house photographer at high prices are running a scam.

Mall scouts

Most legitimate agencies don’t scout in shopping centres. Some do, but they identify themselves with proper credentials and don’t pressure for immediate decisions.

Pressure to sign

Reputable agencies give you time to consider, recommend you take contracts to a solicitor, don’t pressure for same-day signing.

Vague client lists

Real agencies will tell you specifically which brands and clients they book for. Vague claims of ‘major brands’ are a warning sign.

Talent platforms vs agencies

Some online platforms market themselves as agencies but operate as paid talent listings. They charge monthly fees for profile listings without actually booking work. Read the terms carefully.

What Manchester Agencies Look For

Editorial / fashion

Distinctive features, strong bone structure, height, ability to take direction, strong portfolio of editorial work or testing.

Commercial

Approachable, friendly, strong personality on camera, range of expressions, ability to take direction quickly.

E-commerce

Body fits the brand’s target market, ability to work fast and consistently across many looks, professional attitude across long days.

Plus-size

Same as commercial but specifically sizes 14-22. Strong personality and confident on-camera presence.

Real people / lifestyle

Authentic, relatable, range of looks and ages, ability to portray everyday situations naturally.

Useful Resources

Equity (the actors and performers union)

Equity covers some commercial modelling work in the UK. Worth joining for protection on commercial bookings.

The Association of Model Agents

UK trade body for legitimate model agencies. Member agencies follow industry standards. Boss, Nemesis and most major Manchester agencies are members.

Models 1 (London-based, Manchester scouting)

Worth knowing if you’re interested in international work via London representation. Several Manchester models are placed via London agencies for international bookings.
