Wine bars matter if the staff know wine and care about what they serve. Natural wine, traditional wine, doesn’t matter. What matters is quality and knowledge. Manchester has this.
The Beeswing
The Beeswing in the Northern Quarter is the natural wine bar. Natural wine means minimal intervention – no added sulphites, natural fermentation, often cloudy and funky. If you’re new to natural wine, it’s different. Some bottles are wonderful, some are weird. That’s the point. The staff are genuinely knowledgeable. Wine by glass (£6-9) or bottle (£20-50). Small plates of food available. The vibe is relaxed and nerdy about wine.
10 Tib Lane
10 Tib Lane is another natural wine bar in the city centre. Similar philosophy to The Beeswing – natural wine, knowledgeable staff, small food. Slightly busier than The Beeswing. The wine selection is interesting. Prices similar – £6-9 per glass.
Flawd
Flawd in Ancoats takes natural wine seriously. Slightly more upscale than The Beeswing. Food is better – small plates designed to pair with wine. The room feels more designed. Prices are slightly higher – £7-10 per glass. Staff explain the wines properly.
Traditional Wine Bars
Manchester has traditional wine bars that focus on French, Italian, and Spanish wines. The Refuge has a serious wine list. Stocks has good wine. These are proper wine programs, not just wine bars that happen to have wine. The staff know what they’re talking about. Prices are higher than natural wine bars – £8-15 per glass.
What Different Wine Bars Do
Natural wine bars prioritise interesting, unusual wines. The philosophy is minimal intervention and discovery. The staff usually have strong opinions. Traditional wine bars prioritise consistency and known producers. The staff can explain Old World vs New World, tannic structure, food pairing. Both are legitimate. Pick based on what you want – discovery or knowledge.
Practical Wine Bar Advice
If you don’t know what you like, tell the bartender your taste – do you like light or full-bodied, dry or sweet, fruit-forward or mineral. They’ll suggest something. Don’t worry about looking stupid. Wine bars exist to help people find wine they like. Order by the glass first – if you love it, buy a bottle. Water is free. Never finish a glass you don’t like.
