Manchester Emergency Numbers and Useful Contacts

Emergency Services

999 — Police, ambulance, fire. Life-threatening emergencies only.

101 — Greater Manchester Police non-emergency line. Report crimes that aren’t in progress, antisocial behaviour, noise complaints. You’ll wait on hold. That’s just how it is.

111 — NHS non-emergency medical line. If you’re ill but it’s not A&E-level urgent, call 111 first. They’ll tell you whether to go to A&E, a walk-in centre, or a pharmacy. Available 24/7.

112 — European emergency number. Works in the UK too. Useful if your phone defaults to it.

0800 111 999 — Gas emergency (National Gas Emergency Service). Smell gas? Call immediately, open windows, don’t touch light switches.

105 — Power cut reporting (Electricity North West for Manchester). Free to call, 24/7.

Hospitals and A&E

Manchester Royal Infirmary (MRI) — Oxford Road, M13 9WL. The main city centre A&E. Tel: 0161 276 1234. Expect long waits at weekends and Friday nights.

North Manchester General Hospital — Delaunays Road, Crumpsall, M8 5RB. Tel: 0161 624 0420. Serves north Manchester.

Wythenshawe Hospital — Southmoor Road, M23 9LT. Tel: 0161 998 7070. South Manchester and near the airport.

Salford Royal — Stott Lane, Salford, M6 8HD. Tel: 0161 789 7373. Major trauma centre. If you’ve had a serious accident, the ambulance may bring you here regardless of where you are in the city.

Royal Manchester Children’s Hospital — Oxford Road, M13 9WL. Tel: 0161 276 1234. Paediatric A&E for under 16s.

Walk-In Centres and Urgent Care

Manchester Walk-In Centre — Boots, 32 Market Street, M1 1PL. Open 7 days. No appointment needed. Minor injuries, infections, prescriptions. Gets busy on Saturdays.

Hazel Grove Walk-In — Stepping Hill Hospital, Poplar Grove, SK2 7JE. Useful if you’re in south Stockport.

For GP appointments when you can’t see your own doctor, call 111 and they can book same-day slots at local hubs.

Dentists

Emergency dental — Call 111 for out-of-hours dental emergencies. They’ll direct you to the nearest available emergency dentist. Manchester Dental Hospital on Higher Cambridge Street (0161 275 6600) handles complex emergencies during weekday hours.

Mental Health Crisis

Samaritans — 116 123 (free, 24/7). For anyone struggling.

Greater Manchester Mental Health Crisis Line — 0800 953 0285 (24/7). Local crisis team.

Shout — Text SHOUT to 85258. Free crisis text service, 24/7.

Papyrus (under 35s) — 0800 068 4141. Prevention of young suicide.

Manchester City Council

General enquiries — 0161 234 5000. Monday to Friday, 8am–6pm.

Council Tax — 0161 234 5002.

Housing and homelessness — 0161 234 4692.

Bin collection queries — 0161 234 5004. Report missed collections online at manchester.gov.uk — it’s faster than calling.

Report fly-tipping, potholes, streetlight faults — Use the Manchester City Council website’s “Report It” tool or the Love Clean Streets app. Surprisingly effective.

Noise complaints — 0161 234 5004 during office hours. Out of hours: 0161 234 5001 (environmental health on-call).

Lost Property

Metrolink (trams) — 0161 205 2000 or report via tfgm.com. They hold items at their depot.

Stagecoach buses — 0161 273 3377. Check the depot for your route.

Northern Trains — Use the lost property form at northernrailway.co.uk or call 0800 200 6060.

Avanti West Coast — 03457 125 678.

TransPennine Express — 0345 600 1671.

Manchester Airport — 0161 489 3723. Expect a wait.

Taxis (Hackney Carriages) — Contact Manchester City Council licensing: 0161 234 5004. For private hire, contact the company directly.

Utilities

United Utilities (water) — 0345 672 3723. Report leaks: 0800 330 033 (24/7). Manchester’s water comes from the Lake District, which is why it tastes decent.

Electricity North West — 0800 195 4141 (power cuts). 105 also works.

National Gas Emergency — 0800 111 999.

Openreach (broadband faults) — Report through your provider, not Openreach directly. They won’t talk to you.

Taxis and Private Hire

Street Cars — 0161 228 7878. Manchester’s biggest private hire firm. Reliable, reasonable prices.

Arrow Cars — 0161 228 2345. Another major operator.

Uber — Via the app. Surge pricing at pub closing time is painful but the service is everywhere.

Bolt — Via the app. Usually cheaper than Uber in Manchester.

Black cabs — Flag down on the street or find them at ranks outside Piccadilly station, Victoria station, and on Deansgate. Metered fares. More expensive than private hire but you don’t need to pre-book.

Manchester has several consulates and honorary consulates. The main ones:

US Consulate — No full consulate in Manchester. Nearest is the US Embassy in London (020 7499 9000). For emergencies, contact the American Citizens Services line.

Chinese Consulate General — Denison House, 71 Denison Road, Rusholme, M14 5RX. Tel: 0161 224 8672.

Pakistani Consulate — 105 Withington Road, Whalley Range, M16 8EE. Tel: 0161 881 1445.

Turkish Consulate General — Rutland House, 78 Mosley Street, M2 3LQ. Tel: 0161 839 9460.

French Honorary Consul — Contact via the French Embassy in London for current details.

National Rail Enquiries — 03457 48 49 50. Train times and disruptions.

Citizen’s Advice Manchester — 0808 278 7800. Free advice on benefits, debt, housing, employment.

Manchester Central Library — 0161 234 1983. St Peter’s Square, M2 5PD. Free WiFi, free computer access, warm in winter.

Domestic abuse helpline — 0808 2000 247 (24/7, free). Manchester-specific support: 0161 636 7525 (Manchester Women’s Aid).

Childline — 0800 1111. Free, confidential.

RSPCA (animal emergencies) — 0300 1234 999.

Floodline — 0345 988 1188. Check flood warnings for your area during heavy rain — Manchester floods more than you’d think, particularly around the Irwell and Mersey.
