Sometimes you just need someone to sort you out. Manchester has a decent spa scene if you know where to look – from the obvious hotel options to independent spots doing things differently. I’ve tried most of them, and the price doesn’t always predict the experience. Here’s what’s actually worth booking.

01 Spa

The Spa at The Midland

The Midland Hotel on Peter Street is a Manchester institution, and the spa in the basement is one of the city’s more established wellness spaces. It’s compact – don’t expect sprawling thermal suites – but what’s there is well executed. A decent-sized pool, steam room, sauna, and a handful of treatment rooms where the therapists know what they’re doing. The treatment menu covers the standards: Swedish massage, deep tissue, facials, body wraps. Nothing wildly inventive, but everything is done properly.

Day packages: From about £80-£150 depending on treatments included. Some packages include afternoon tea, which is a smart pairing. Couples: Dual treatment rooms available. Honest take: The spa itself is a bit dated compared to newer competitors, and the pool area is small. But the therapists are experienced, the hotel setting adds a layer of occasion, and the afternoon tea combo makes it a good option for birthdays or anniversaries. You’re paying partly for the postcode and the building – which, to be fair, is a beautiful building.

02 Lowry

The Lowry Hotel Spa

The Lowry Hotel on Chapel Wharf in Salford runs a spa that leans heavily into the luxury end. The setting helps – the hotel sits on the River Irwell with floor-to-ceiling windows, and the whole place has that calm, expensive feel that puts you in the right headspace before you’ve even put a robe on. The treatment menu is more contemporary than The Midland’s, with a focus on results-driven facials alongside the usual massage and body treatments.

Day packages: From about £100-£200. Premium products used throughout. Couples: Yes – couple’s treatment room with a private lounge area. Honest take: Genuinely feels like a proper escape from the city, even though you’re five minutes from Deansgate. The therapists are skilled and the products are premium. It’s expensive, but if you’re marking an occasion and want the full luxury experience, The Lowry delivers. The riverside setting makes the whole thing feel a notch above.

03 Velvet

The Velvet Hotel Spa

The Velvet Hotel on Canal Street has a small but well-considered spa on the lower level. It’s more intimate than the big hotel spas – a couple of treatment rooms, a relaxation area, and a focus on doing fewer things well rather than offering a massive menu. The treatments lean towards holistic and relaxation-focused, which suits the boutique hotel aesthetic. It’s a good option if you want quality treatments without the scale (and crowds) of a larger spa.

Day packages: From about £60-£120. Couples: Limited but available. Honest take: Small and personal. You won’t get a pool or thermal suite here, but the treatment quality is high and the atmosphere is calm. Works well as a standalone treatment visit – in, treatment, relaxation, out. If you’re after an afternoon of lounging around a pool area, look elsewhere. If you want a focused hour of excellent massage or facial work, it’s a strong pick.

04 Bannatyne8217s

Bannatyne’s Health Club and Spa

Bannatyne’s has multiple Manchester locations – the one in Quay Street is the most central. The spa facilities sit within the wider health club, so you get access to the gym, pool, and thermal suite alongside your treatments. The thermal suite typically includes a sauna, steam room, and sometimes a salt room or ice room depending on the branch. Treatment quality is consistent – not groundbreaking, but professional and reliable. The value proposition is decent, especially with their regular online offers.

Day packages: From about £50-£100. Frequent online deals – check before booking at full price. Couples: Spa day packages for two are a regular offer. Pool: Yes – included with spa access. Honest take: The best value spa day in central Manchester. The facilities are more extensive than most hotel spas – you’ll spend more time actually using things rather than waiting for your single treatment slot. It’s not luxury, but it’s a proper day out and the price is fair. The Quay Street branch is the best of the Manchester locations.

05 Victoria

Victoria Baths – Special Events

Victoria Baths on Hathersage Road is a Grade II listed Edwardian swimming pool that closed for regular swimming decades ago but has been slowly restored by a dedicated trust. It’s not a spa in the conventional sense, but they run occasional special events – Turkish bath experiences, wellness evenings, and seasonal one-off sessions – in one of the most buildings in Manchester. The tiled interiors and stained glass windows make it a completely unique setting.

Events: Occasional – check their website and social media for dates. They sell out fast. Price: Varies by event. Typically £30-£60. Honest take: Not a regular spa you can book on any Tuesday, but when they do run events, it’s a genuinely special experience. The building alone is worth seeing. If you love architectural heritage and want a wellness experience that feels nothing like a chain spa, keep an eye on Victoria Baths’ schedule. Get on their mailing list – tickets go quickly.

06 Thai

Thai Bodywork – Northern Quarter

Thai Bodywork on Tib Street in the Northern Quarter has been a fixture for years. It’s an independent Thai massage studio – no pools, no steam rooms, no fluffy robes. Just skilled Thai massage therapists in a clean, calm space. Traditional Thai massage, oil massage, foot massage, and combination treatments. The focus is entirely on the bodywork itself, and the therapists are properly trained. If what you actually want is an excellent massage rather than a spa ‘experience’, this is where to go.

Prices: From about £35 for a foot massage to £70-£90 for a full-body session. Couples: Side-by-side treatments available. Honest take: The best massage I’ve had in Manchester, full stop. No pretence, no unnecessary extras, just very good therapists doing their job. The NQ location is easy to pair with dinner or drinks before or after. If you’re the type who finds hotel spa experiences a bit performative and just wants someone skilled to work on your shoulders for an hour, Thai Bodywork is your place.

07 Float

The Float Level

The Float Level is a flotation therapy centre – sensory deprivation tanks filled with Epsom salt solution that you float in, weightlessly, in silence and darkness. It’s a completely different proposition from a traditional spa. Each session is typically 60 minutes, and the experience ranges from deeply relaxing to mildly unsettling, depending on how comfortable you are with silence and your own thoughts. The tanks are private, the facility is clean, and the staff are knowledgeable about the practice.

Prices: From about £40-£50 per float session. Packages and memberships bring the per-session cost down. Honest take: Not for everyone, and that’s fine. If you’re open to it, floating can be genuinely restorative – particularly good for muscle recovery, stress, and just switching your brain off for an hour. If you’re claustrophobic or need constant stimulation, it might be a tough sell. Try it once before committing to a package. It’s one of those things you either love or absolutely don’t.

08 About

What About Cloud 23?

Cloud 23 at the Beetham Tower (Hilton) is primarily a bar – the cocktail bar on the 23rd floor with the famous Manchester skyline views. It doesn’t operate as a spa in its own right, though the Hilton does have health club facilities for hotel guests. If someone’s recommended Cloud 23 as a spa, they may be confusing it with the bar. It’s a great spot for drinks with a view, but go to The Lowry or The Midland for actual spa treatments.

09 Luxury

Luxury vs Value – The Honest Summary

If you want full luxury and don’t mind the bill: The Lowry Hotel Spa. Best overall value for a full spa day: Bannatyne’s Quay Street. Best standalone massage: Thai Bodywork, NQ. Most experience: Victoria Baths (when events are running). Something completely different: The Float Level.

Whatever you pick, book ahead. Manchester’s spa spots fill up faster than you’d expect, especially on weekends and around any gift-giving occasion. Leaving it to the last minute means you’re stuck with the worst time slots or nothing at all.
