Night & Day has been the heartbeat of the Northern Quarter since 1991 and the list of bands who played early shows here reads like a who’s who of British music. Elbow, Arctic Monkeys, Doves, The 1975 – they all came through this tiny room on Oldham Street before anyone knew their names. The venue nearly got shut down by a noise complaint a few years back and the city rallied to save it. That tells you everything about what this place means to Manchester.
During the day it’s a laid-back café-bar. Good coffee, decent food, people working on laptops or reading. Come evening it transforms. The back room hosts gigs most nights – capacity is maybe 150, so every show is up close and personal. Sound is raw but that’s the point. You’re not coming here for polished production. You’re coming to see the next big thing in a room small enough to touch the stage.
Drinks are cheap, door prices are low, and the atmosphere runs on pure love for live music. If you only visit one venue in the Northern Quarter, make it this one. It’s earned its place in Manchester history ten times over.
