Yard & Coop does one thing and does it brilliantly: buttermilk fried chicken. The menu at this Northern Quarter spot on Edge Street is almost entirely chicken-based, which might sound limiting until you realise how many ways they’ve found to make it interesting. Whole birds, strips, wings, burgers, loaded fries – all brined in buttermilk, coated in a secret-recipe batter, and fried until golden and crunchy. The chicken is juicy inside, shattering on the outside, and genuinely addictive.
But the real stars are the sauces. The Yard sauce is tangy and moreish, the buffalo is properly hot, and there are rotating specials that keep things interesting. Sides are solid – mac and cheese, slaw, corn on the cob – and portions are generous enough that you’ll leave properly full. The space has that casual NQ vibe with exposed brick and graffiti touches, and it’s a brilliant spot for groups. Prices are fair for the quality and quantity. Yard & Coop carved out its niche in Manchester’s fried chicken scene early and it’s still one of the best in the game.
