Couch to 5K in Manchester: Your Guide
Thousands of Mancunians have started running through the NHS Couch to 5K programme. Here is where to find group sessions and the best Manchester parks to use it.

The NHS Couch to 5K programme has become the standard way into running for a huge number of people in Manchester and across the UK. The nine-week app-based plan alternates walking and running in gradually increasing intervals, taking a complete beginner from a first tentative jog to a comfortable 5k over about two months. Beyond the app, Manchester has a network of organised group Couch to 5K sessions run by local running clubs and leisure centres. Parkrun itself runs a junior and beginner-friendly programme through many local events, and Manchester University Road Runners and Chorlton Runners among others have offered group C25K routes at different times of year – check their websites and Facebook pages for current schedules.
For solo app users, the choice of park matters. Flat parks are kinder to new runners whose legs and lungs are still adjusting. Platt Fields Park in Rusholme is one of the best in south Manchester – a flat loop of about 1km around the lake, surfaced paths, well-lit and busy enough to feel safe. Heaton Park in north Manchester gives you more space and a flatter lower section near the boating lake. Wythenshawe Park in the south provides wide open tarmac paths with room to run without weaving around other park users. All three are well served by public transport. Wherever you start, a pair of proper running shoes from a running shop with a gait analysis will make the first few weeks considerably more comfortable.
