Pennington Flash parkrun: Course Guide
If you want a fast time, Pennington Flash is your course - flat lakeside paths at a wildlife reserve west of Manchester, sheltered and quick underfoot.

Pennington Flash parkrun is set in Pennington Flash Country Park on the western edge of Leigh, a large lakeside wildlife reserve that was reclaimed from former colliery land. The Flash – a large subsidence lake – forms the centrepiece of the park, and the parkrun course follows the flat paths along its perimeter through open grassland and waterside sections. It is one of the flattest and fastest courses in the Greater Manchester area, regularly attracting runners targeting personal bests. The wildlife reserve setting adds a genuine sense of space that you do not get at urban park events.
Pennington Flash is most easily reached by car – it sits between Leigh and Golborne and the country park has its own car park. For those without a car, bus services connect Leigh town centre to the park, and Leigh itself is accessible by bus from Manchester. It is a longer journey from the city centre without a car but manageable for a Saturday morning. The event is well-organised with good facilities at the country park. If you have been chasing a 5k personal best and not found it on a hillier course, the Flash is worth making the effort to get to.
