Guide

Table tennis has a strong competitive base in Manchester through the Manchester Table Tennis Association, which runs senior and junior leagues at venues across the city. The sport is played at leisure centres, community halls and dedicated venues, and the club structure is deeper than most people expect given how low-profile the sport tends to be. If you played at school and want to get back into it, or if you are a complete beginner wanting to try something indoors and accessible, getting in touch with the MTTA is the straightforward first step – they can point you toward clubs running beginner and improver sessions near you. The standard across Manchester’s club scene ranges from genuinely county-level competitive down to relaxed social evenings, so finding a level that suits is not difficult.

On the casual side, public outdoor table tennis tables have been appearing in Manchester’s public spaces over recent years – MediaCityUK in Salford is one of the better-known installations, and there are tables in several parks and public squares across the city. Bats are sometimes available at local cafes or leisure centres nearby; otherwise a cheap set of bats and a ball is all you need. Table Tennis England has been pushing an Xpect model to bring recreational play into shopping centres and public venues, and there are periodic installations in Manchester city centre as part of that programme. It is one of the few sports where a rough concrete floor and a rough concrete ceiling is genuinely no barrier – if there is a table, you can play.
