Community Basketball in Manchester: Courts & Clubs
From the National Basketball Performance Centre at SportCity to street courts across the estates, Manchester has a real basketball community worth tapping into.

The National Basketball Performance Centre opened at SportCity in 2012 and is the most significant basketball facility in the north of England – full-size competition courts, a training base for national programmes, and a hub that has helped anchor a more serious approach to the sport in the city. It is used for competitions and elite development, but it sits in an area that has always had a strong grassroots basketball culture, and that connection to the community matters. The Manchester Giants community programme is the most visible face of that grassroots work, running junior clubs, school outreach and participation sessions that have introduced the sport to players who would not otherwise have access to coaching.
Away from SportCity, basketball happens in leisure centres, school sports halls and on outdoor courts across the city. Piccadilly Gardens has had outdoor hoops for years, and there are courts at various parks and estates across Salford, Wythenshawe and east Manchester that see regular use in the evenings. The sport has grown considerably in the last decade – driven partly by NBA visibility via social media and partly by its natural fit in urban areas. Junior clubs are the best pathway for younger players, and the Basketball England club finder is the place to start for adults wanting competitive league play. Drop-in sessions at leisure centres are less structured but good for anyone who just wants to run.
