Every academic year in Manchester brings changes. New venues open. Old ones close. Prices shift. Rules change. This is the autumn 2026 briefing for students – what’s new, what to know, and what’s coming this academic year.
What’s New for 2026-27
Venues and nightlife
The Manchester venue scene stays active. Notable changes going into the 2026-27 academic year:
- The Warehouse Project continues at Depot Mayfield for the 2026-27 season, running September to early January with typical programming quality. Sign up to their mailing list with your student email as soon as you arrive.
- New bars continue to open in the Northern Quarter and Ancoats – check our events guide for current listings.
- Some city centre venues have opened or rebranded in 2025 and 2026 – the student scene is more varied than the established 42s-Fifth-Club Academy core.
Transport
- Bee Network integration continues to consolidate bus and tram services into one system across Greater Manchester.
- The £2 single bus fare cap has been extended – confirm current pricing via the Bee Network app.
- Student Metrolink passes – TfGM periodically updates student pricing; check the website for current rates.
- Cycle infrastructure continues to expand – the Oxford Road cycle lane remains the gold standard but more routes are being added across the city.
Universities
- Tuition fees for 2026-27 remain capped at £9,250/year for most home students. International fees are significantly higher and vary by course.
- UoM’s MECD (Manchester Engineering Campus Development) is now fully operational – new engineering facilities.
- MMU’s digital and creative programmes continue to expand.
- Salford’s MediaCityUK presence continues to grow with new industry partnerships.
Accommodation
- Purpose-built student accommodation (PBSA) has continued to grow in Manchester city centre. More options, but prices have largely held firm or risen.
- Shared house rent in Fallowfield, Rusholme, and Hulme has increased modestly year-on-year (typically 5-8% annual rises).
- Salford remains the cheapest major student area.
- HMO licensing enforcement in Manchester has increased, which benefits students in terms of minimum standards.
Student finance
- Maintenance loan amounts for 2026-27 have updated with inflation. Check the Student Finance England portal for your specific entitlement.
- The repayment threshold for Plan 5 loans (2023+ starters) is £25,000. Plan 2 threshold is around £27,295.
- Postgraduate master’s loan for 2026-27 is up to £12,471.
Cost of living
Compared to autumn 2025:
- Food prices have increased modestly. Aldi and Lidl remain the cheapest supermarkets.
- Energy bills in student houses with non-bills-included tenancies remain higher than pre-2022 levels.
- Going out costs have crept up – pints £4.50-6, club entry £5-20 depending on venue.
- Use our updated budget calculator for 2026 numbers.
