Castlefield layers Roman Manchester, canal engineering and railway arches into a compact waterside district. It feels calm by day, then fills out when the terraces and outdoor stages are busy.
Follow the towpaths, stop by the reconstructed Roman fort and use the area as the southern gateway into Deansgate. It is one of the best short walks for understanding how the city grew.
