Finding an NHS dentist

General guidance on registering with an NHS dentist as a student.

Dental care for students

When you move to Manchester, you need to register with a dentist in the city even if you had one at home. Use the NHS service finder on the NHS website to locate dentists accepting new patients in your area. Many dentists fill their patient lists quickly, so register early. When you call to book, mention you're a new student - some surgeries have specific patient appointment slots or dedicated new patient processes. Bring proof of your student status and address when you attend for your first appointment.

NHS dental care is subsidised - you pay significantly less than private dentistry. Routine check-ups and basic treatments are covered at fixed prices. More complex treatments may cost more, but still less than private options. If you're on a low income as a student, you may qualify for NHS exemptions or reductions - ask when you register. Emergency dental care is available through NHS out-of-hours services if you get tooth pain outside normal hours.

Regular dental check-ups prevent problems becoming expensive. Schedule a check-up when you arrive in Manchester rather than waiting until something hurts. If cost is a concern, discuss options with your dentist - they can suggest treatments based on what needs doing now versus what can wait. Dental health matters for your wellbeing and your wallet, so sorting this out early in your time as a student is practical planning.
