Mental health support in Manchester

Overview of where students can find mental health support.

Student wellbeing

Both universities have student wellbeing and counselling services. These are typically free to access through your student registration. Waiting times vary depending on how busy services are, but they're the first point of contact if you're struggling. Your university may also have mental health advisors, pastoral support from academic departments, or peer support networks. Check your university's student support pages for specific services available. The quality and approach of different services varies, so if one doesn't work for you, ask about alternatives.

If you're in crisis or things feel urgent, the NHS has crisis teams available. Your GP can also refer you for talking therapies. Student unions sometimes run mental health campaigns and can signpost you to resources. Many students find talking to friends, family, or flatmates helps - you don't have to face everything alone. If you're feeling overwhelmed early in term, that's normal and worth addressing rather than pushing through.

Mental health during university isn't something shameful to hide - it's a practical part of managing student life. Stress, anxiety, and low mood are common experiences. Getting support early is better than waiting until things feel unmanageable. Your university is invested in your wellbeing as a student. Use what's available to you. Academic adjustments or deferrals are sometimes necessary - talk to your department if you're struggling to engage with your course.
