Salford University Student Guide – Everything for Salford Uni Students

The University of Salford has around 22,000 students and a completely different feel from UoM and MMU. The Peel Park campus is self-contained with grounds and trees. The MediaCityUK campus puts you next to BBC Studios, ITV, and dock10. If you’re studying media, creative, sport, or anything health-related, Salford is often the smart choice. This is your guide.

The Campuses

Peel Park

Salford’s main campus, five minutes’ walk from the Crescent and Salford Central railway station. Houses most academic departments, the main library (Clifford Whitworth Library), the sports centre, and the main students’ union. The campus feels like a traditional university – grounds, green space, a pond, Peel Park itself adjoining the campus grounds. Very different from the urban Oxford Road experience at UoM and MMU.

MediaCityUK

Where the School of Arts, Media and Creative Technology is based. Directly on the Metrolink (Eccles line from Manchester city centre). Walk out of the building and you’re next to BBC Studios, ITV, dock10 production studios, Coronation Street set, and the Lowry theatre. Purpose-built for media students. Industry access is genuinely exceptional.

Frederick Road

Campus for allied health professions (nursing, midwifery, physiotherapy, occupational therapy). Short walk from Peel Park. Connected by campus shuttle.

Salford Strengths

Media and creative

Salford has long been a serious player in media education. The BBC’s move to MediaCityUK in 2011 reinforced this. Strong in TV production, radio, journalism, film, and emerging areas like virtual production. Industry connections are real – placements at BBC, ITV, and dock10 are routine for strong students.

Sport

The Sport, Exercise and Physiotherapy department is well-regarded. The on-campus sports centre is modern, and the university has strong links with Salford Red Devils (rugby league), Salford City FC, and other regional clubs.

Built environment

Salford’s School of Science, Engineering and Environment has strong programmes in quantity surveying, building surveying, and construction management. The industry rates the courses highly.

Health sciences

Nursing and midwifery programmes are well-placed for NHS employment given Salford’s proximity to Salford Royal Hospital and Manchester’s major hospital trusts.

Halls

Salford has about 2,500 bed spaces. The main halls are:

  • Peel Park Quarter: On the Peel Park campus itself. Modern, purpose-built. £130-180/week. The student experience is concentrated here – most first-year halls residents are within a 10-minute walk of each other.
  • Castle Irwell Student Village: A bit further but well-connected. Older stock but cheaper.
  • John Lester / Eddie Colman Courts: Traditional halls. Self-catered, close to campus.

For second year onwards, most Salford students move to shared houses in Salford itself (around Broughton, Lower Broughton, or Chapel Street) or cross into Manchester. Rent in Salford is typically £50-150/month cheaper than Manchester for similar properties. See our Salford student living guide.

The SU

Salford SU is smaller than UoM’s but punches above its weight in specific areas. Strong sports programme (BUCS and recreational), active media groups given the university’s strengths, and genuinely good student support services. The SU bar (Atmosphere) is the main on-campus social spot. The SU also runs freshers week, major events, and welfare services.

Getting Around

From Salford to Manchester

Salford Central railway station is five minutes from Peel Park – trains into Manchester Victoria every 10 minutes. The Metrolink from MediaCityUK reaches Manchester city centre in 15 minutes. Buses from Salford Crescent serve the city centre regularly.

Between Salford campuses

The free campus shuttle connects Peel Park, MediaCityUK, and Frederick Road during term time. Check the travel pages for current timetables. Walking between Peel Park and MediaCityUK takes about 45 minutes; the Metrolink plus short walk is 20 minutes.

See our transport guide for fare details.

Money at Salford

  • Salford Undergraduate Bursary: Means-tested, automatic for qualifying students. Check the university finance pages.
  • Part-time work: Campus jobs via the SU and careers portal. MediaCityUK companies hire for intermittent runner and production assistant roles – ask early and often if you’re in media. See our jobs guide.
  • Transport costs: Salford students who live in Salford have lower transport costs than students who live in Manchester and commute out. Factor this in when choosing accommodation.

Salford Student Support

  • askUS: The main student advice centre at Peel Park. Handles academic, financial, and welfare queries.
  • Wellbeing service: Free counselling and mental health support. Also partnership with Togetherall for 24/7 online mental health community.
  • Careers and Employability Team: CV reviews, employer events, placements support.

Salford-Specific Tips

  • The Lowry: Theatre and gallery at MediaCityUK. Free gallery entry. Student discount on theatre tickets. Walking distance from the MediaCity campus.
  • Salford Quays walk: The walk around the Quays past the Millennium footbridge and the Imperial War Museum North (free) is one of the best in Greater Manchester. Do it on a sunny afternoon.
  • Kings Arms, Chapel Street: One of the best pub-venues in Greater Manchester. Live music, decent beer, actual character.
  • The rent saving adds up: Over three years, living in Salford versus Fallowfield can save £4,500-6,000. Use the Salford Uni location – don’t commute for no reason.

How Salford Differs from UoM and MMU

  • Scale: Salford feels smaller and more personal. You’ll recognise people from your course after a few weeks. UoM and MMU are both 2-3x the size.
  • Campus: Peel Park is a traditional campus with grounds. UoM and MMU are urban and integrated with the city centre.
  • Social scene: Smaller but tighter. Most Salford students socialise around Peel Park and Chapel Street rather than heading into Manchester every night. The downside is more limited nightlife variety locally.
  • Industry links: In media, creative, and some engineering fields, Salford’s industry links are genuinely stronger due to MediaCityUK. For law, business, medicine, or finance, UoM has more recognised brand value.
