Castlefield is Manchester's oldest quarter. The Romans built the fort of Mamucium here in AD 79. The Bridgewater Canal arrived in 1761, the world's first industrial canal, and the basin is still lined with wharves and towering brick viaducts. Today the canal basin is where Mancunians go when the sun comes out: Dukes 92 and Barca on the waterside, the Castlefield Bowl for outdoor gigs. The Science and Industry Museum on Liverpool Road is free entry and a full afternoon. Walk the towpath west and you can follow the canal all the way to Worsley and beyond.
