Northern Quarter

The Northern Quarter runs on vinyl shops, indie coffee, street art and a refusal to grow up. This is where Afflecks still sells doc martens and hair dye to 16-year-olds, where Piccadilly Records has been stocking imports since 1978, and where the Koffee Pot does a proper fry-up to anyone who's rolled out of a Soup Kitchen set at 4am. Tib Street, Stevenson Square, Oldham Street and Thomas Street form the spine of the district, with a rotating cast of bars: Port Street Beer House for Belgian Trappists, The Castle Hotel for Northern Soul nights, Matt & Phreds for jazz seven nights a week, and the Bay Horse Tavern for a pint that won't wreck your wallet. Food leans independent: This & That for a rice-and-three curry, Bundobust for Gujarati street food, Black Milk for cereal dessert madness, and Mughli on the edge of Rusholme for dry-aged chops. The NQ isn't polished. The pavements are patchy, the murals get tagged, and half the buildings still have old signwriting from their cloth-cutting days. That's the point. This is where Manchester's culture actually happens. It's where The Smiths started, where Joy Division played the Electric Circus, where the Hacienda generation still drinks. If you only visit one neighbourhood, come here first.
