Manchester has a massive halal food scene. The city’s large South Asian, Middle Eastern, and North African communities mean halal options go far beyond your standard chicken shop. From fine dining to street food, Rusholme to the city centre, this guide covers the restaurants worth knowing about and helps you navigate the difference between properly halal-certified and places that just claim to be.
Halal-Certified vs Halal-Friendly – What’s the Difference
This matters. Halal-certified means the restaurant has been inspected and certified by a recognised halal certification body (like the HMC – Halal Monitoring Committee, or HFA – Halal Food Authority). The meat supply chain is verified. Halal-friendly means the restaurant claims to serve halal meat but may not have formal certification – they might source from halal suppliers but place’t been through the audit process.
For most people eating halal, certified restaurants give more confidence. If certification matters to you, ask the restaurant directly which body certifies them, or look for certificates displayed near the counter. Most restaurants on the Curry Mile are halal but not all are formally certified – ask if you’re unsure.
The Curry Mile – Rusholme
Wilmslow Road through Rusholme is Manchester’s famous Curry Mile. Nearly every restaurant here serves halal food. It’s loud, it’s busy, and the quality varies wildly from excellent to mediocre. Here are the ones worth your time:
Mughli
30 Wilmslow Road, Rusholme, M14 5TQ. Charcoal pit cooking, proper Mughlai and Punjabi dishes. The seekh kebabs are outstanding. The lamb chops off the grill are some of the best you’ll eat in Manchester. This is not a standard curry house – it’s a level above. Halal. Book ahead on weekends because it fills up.
Yadgar
89 Wilmslow Road, Rusholme, M14 5SU. Pakistani home-style cooking. The karahi dishes are the thing to order. Portions are huge and prices are low. It’s basic inside – you come for the food, not the decor. Halal. Cash preferred, though they take card now.
Jaffa Restaurant
72 Wilmslow Road, Rusholme, M14 5AL. Palestinian and Middle Eastern food. Good hummus, shawarma, mixed grills. Halal. One of the better Middle Eastern options on the Curry Mile.
Al-Faisal
56 Thomas Street (also has a Rusholme presence). Pakistani and Kashmiri food. Known for the tandoori and karahi dishes. Been going for decades. Halal.
City Centre Halal
Archie’s
Multiple locations – Oxford Road, Deansgate, Trafford Centre, Arndale. Burgers, loaded fries, shakes, American-style fast food. All halal. Massively popular with the younger crowd. Late-night opening at some branches. The Oxford Road branch is open until 4am on weekends and is a post-club institution.
MyLahore
76-78 Wilmslow Road, Rusholme, M14 5AL. Also in Stockport Road, Longsight. Pakistani and British-Asian fusion. Huge menu – grills, curries, burgers, wraps, desserts. Family-friendly with a big dining hall. All halal (HMC certified). Popular for large group dinners.
Asha’s
47 Peter Street, M2 3NG. Indian fine dining in the city centre. Modern Indian cuisine in a sleek setting. The menu includes halal options – the lamb and chicken dishes use halal meat. The cocktail bar is a plus if you’re with a mixed group. Pricier than Rusholme but the food and service justify it for a special occasion.
Dishoom
32 Bridge Street, M3 3BT. Bombay-style cafe serving breakfast through dinner. The chicken and lamb dishes are halal. The black daal is legendary. Beautiful restaurant, always busy. Book ahead or prepare to queue.
Zouk Tea Bar & Grill
Unit 5, The Quadrangle, Chester Street, M1 5QS. Pakistani and North Indian cuisine with a modern twist. Halal. The mixed grill platters are excellent. Good for groups. The chai is proper.
Kabana
Sackville Street, M1 3WA. No-frills Pakistani grill house. The lamb chops, seekh kebabs, and naan are outstanding for the price. It’s tiny, basic, and always packed. Halal. One of those places where the food is brilliant and the setting is irrelevant.
Turkish and Lebanese
Istanbul Grill
79 Bridge Street, M3 2RH. Turkish grill with proper charcoal-cooked kebabs, pide, and mezes. Halal. The mixed grill platter feeds two people easily. Good value for the city centre.
Comptoir Libanais
18-19 The Avenue, Spinningfields, M3 3HF. Lebanese chain but the food is solid – mezze platters, shawarma wraps, falafel, grilled meats. Halal options clearly marked. Colourful, casual, good for lunch.
Bakchich
49-51 Portland Street, M1 3LF. Lebanese street food. Wraps, platters, fattoush, grilled halloumi. Halal chicken and lamb. Fast, affordable, and the garlic sauce is addictive. Good late-night option.
Longsight and Levenshulme
Stockport Road through Longsight and Levenshulme has a brilliant stretch of halal restaurants and takeaways that fly under the radar compared to the Curry Mile.
Lahore Kebab House
141 Stockport Road, Longsight, M12 4AH. Pakistani grills and curries. Cheap, generous, and very good. Halal. The tikka and naan bread combination at 11pm is a Longsight rite of passage.
Levenshulme Bakery and several South Asian eateries
Along Stockport Road in Levy, there are multiple halal takeaways and small restaurants. The quality is high and prices are lower than the Curry Mile because you’re not paying for the Rusholme name.
Halal Burgers and Fast Food
- Archie’s – Mentioned above. The go-to halal burger chain in Manchester.
- Almost Famous – Great Northern Warehouse. Not fully halal. The chicken is halal but the beef is not. Ask staff to confirm current sourcing.
- Handmade Burger Co – The Corn Exchange. Halal chicken options available.
- Nando’s – Several Manchester branches are halal-certified. Not all of them. The Rusholme, Fallowfield, and some city centre branches are halal. Check the Nando’s website for the current list – it changes.
- Subway – Some Manchester Subways are halal-certified. The ones in areas with large Muslim populations tend to be. Again, ask or look for the certificate.
Halal Chains to Know
Several national chains have halal branches in Manchester:
- KFC – A few Manchester KFCs have trialled halal menus. Check their website for current locations.
- GDK (German Doner Kebab) – All halal. Multiple Manchester locations. Consistent quality.
- Chopstix – Chinese fast food chain, halal certified at most locations.
Where to Find Halal Groceries
If you’re self-catering or just want halal meat to cook at home:
- Rusholme and Longsight – Dozens of halal butchers along Wilmslow Road and Stockport Road. Competitive prices, fresh meat.
- Cheetham Hill – Multiple halal supermarkets and butchers. Good for bulk buying.
- Global Food Market – Several locations. Wide range of halal groceries and imported goods.
- Major supermarkets – Tesco, Asda, and Morrisons stock halal meat sections in their larger Manchester stores, particularly in areas with significant Muslim populations.
The Bottom Line
Manchester is one of the best cities in the UK for halal food. The range goes from £3 wraps on Stockport Road to fine dining on Peter Street. Rusholme is the obvious starting point but the city centre has caught up significantly. If halal certification (not just halal-sourced) matters to you, always ask. Most places are happy to show you their certificate. And if someone gets defensive when you ask, that tells you something.
