Yang Sing has been on Princess Street since 1977 and three generations of the same family have kept it at the top. This is the best Chinese restaurant in Manchester and has been for longer than most people in the city have been alive. The dim sum is the main event – delicate, perfectly steamed, with fillings that are fresh and expertly seasoned. Har gow, siu mai, char siu bao, turnip cake – the classics are all here and they’re all done properly. The dim sum menu alone could keep you coming back for months without repeating an order.
Beyond dim sum, the wider Cantonese menu is extensive and consistently excellent. Crispy aromatic duck, whole steamed sea bass, clay pot dishes – everything is cooked with a confidence that comes from nearly five decades of doing this. The dining room is large, often busy, and has that buzz of a restaurant that’s genuinely loved by its regulars. Service is efficient and no-nonsense. Yang Sing doesn’t chase trends or reinvent itself. It doesn’t need to. It’s been the gold standard for Cantonese food in Manchester since the late seventies and nothing has come close to knocking it off that perch.
