The Washhouse is Manchester’s worst-kept secret, but it still catches people out. From the outside it’s a functioning launderette on Shudehill — washing machines, detergent, the lot. Getting in requires a booking and a bit of nerve. You’ll stand there feeling daft until you find the way through, and that’s half the fun.
Inside it’s small, dark, and atmospheric. Maybe 30 people at capacity, which keeps things intimate. The cocktail menu is short but every drink is properly made — the bartenders here take their time and they’re good at what they do. Expect classic cocktails done right alongside a few house creations that change regularly. Prices are higher than your average NQ bar but you’re paying for the experience and the quality.
It works best for date nights or small groups. Don’t turn up mob-handed expecting to get in — this isn’t that kind of place. Book through the website, arrive on time, and don’t wear a football shirt. The whole thing could easily feel gimmicky but it doesn’t. The drinks are genuinely excellent and the room has real character. One of the few concept bars in Manchester that actually delivers on the promise.
