University of Manchester student guide

Overview guide to studying at UoM, covering campus layout and getting settled.

Oxford Road campus

The University of Manchester's campus sprawls across central Manchester, centred on Oxford Road but extending into surrounding areas. First-year induction will walk you through the main buildings - the library, the central lecture theatres, faculty buildings - but the campus is worth exploring on your own. Building layouts can seem confusing at first (take the 2nd floor to find level 1, navigate the connected walkways between blocks) but it becomes routine quickly.

The library is where you'll spend substantial time. Get familiar with its layout early and know where your subject library is located. The University also has departmental libraries and quiet study spaces scattered across campus. The main students' union is on Oxford Road and serves as the social hub - it's the first place to find out about events, clubs, and student life information beyond what formal induction provides.

Most first-year halls are within walking distance of campus or a short bus journey away. The transition from home to living in halls is the bigger adjustment than the campus layout - take time to find quiet spots on campus where you can retreat if halls feel overwhelming, and use the student support services available through your department and the university's student wellbeing team.
