Walk down Oldham Street on a Saturday afternoon and you will understand immediately why the Northern Quarter remains Manchester’s most compelling neighbourhood. Every unit is occupied; every doorway leads somewhere interesting. Record shops, coffee roasters, vintage clothing, independent galleries, cocktail bars and pizza restaurants compete for your attention across six dense, walkable blocks.
The neighbourhood has resisted the homogenisation that has flattened so many of Britain’s urban areas. There is still no chain coffee on the main drag. The street art changes regularly.
