Band on the Wall

Historic Swan Street music venue specialising in world music, jazz, and Afrobeat across two recently refurbished rooms.

Band on the Wall has been putting on live music since 1935 and the list of people who’ve played here is staggering – Buzzcocks, Joy Division, Nico, and decades of jazz, world music, and everything else that doesn’t fit neatly into a genre box. After a major refurbishment that added a second room and upgraded everything from the sound to the toilets, it’s come back better than ever.

The main room holds around 300 and the new Piccadilly Room adds a more intimate space for smaller shows. The programming is where Band on the Wall stands apart from every other venue in Manchester. This is where you come for Afrobeat, highlife, Latin, jazz, funk, and global sounds you won’t hear anywhere else in the city. They also do spoken word, comedy, and the occasional electronic night.

Sound quality is excellent – the refurb clearly prioritised getting that right. Sightlines are good from most spots and the bar is well-stocked without being overpriced. The venue sits on Swan Street at the edge of the Northern Quarter, an area that’s changed massively around it while Band on the Wall kept doing its thing. It’s a Manchester institution for a reason. If your usual playlist needs shaking up, start here.
