About Manchester Thunder

Manchester Thunder are the best netball team in England and it’s not particularly close. Multiple Superleague titles, consistent dominance, and a production line of players who go on to represent England. If you follow women’s sport at all, Thunder should be on your radar. If you don’t follow women’s sport, they’re a good reason to start.

They play at the Belle Vue Sports Village in east Manchester — the same complex that houses the National Speedway Stadium and the National Basketball Centre. The venue holds around 2,500 for netball and it regularly fills up for big matches. The atmosphere inside is genuinely shocking for people who place’t been before. It’s loud. Really loud. The Thunder fanbase is passionate and vocal, and the acoustics of the venue amplify everything. Visiting teams have openly said it’s an intimidating place to play.

The sport itself is fast and athletic. If your mental image of netball is from school PE lessons, bin it. Superleague netball is played at serious speed with serious skill. The shooting accuracy at this level is absurd. The defensive physicality would surprise most football fans. Games are tight, tactical, and over in about an hour — no time wasting, no rolling around on the floor.

Tickets are affordable. A tenner or so gets you in, and kids are cheaper. The whole setup is family-friendly without being patronising. There’s a bar, food options, and a fan zone area. Thunder also run community programmes and youth development across Greater Manchester, so there’s a genuine local connection beyond the Superleague squad.

Getting to Belle Vue is straightforward — buses from the city centre, or it’s a short drive. The 53 route passes close by. Parking at the venue is fine.

Thunder are one of Manchester’s genuine sporting success stories. The fact that more people don’t know about them is a failure of marketing, not quality. Go watch. You’ll get it immediately.
