Part-time jobs for students

Where students typically find part-time work around the city.

Student employment

Retail and hospitality hire a lot of students. Supermarkets, clothing shops, and restaurants need staff for evenings and weekends. The work is straightforward if not always exciting - you learn to use tills, take orders, stock shelves. The money is reasonable and the hours are flexible around lectures. Retail work is one of the easiest part-time jobs to get as a student because employers know students need flexibility and high turnover isn't a concern.

Bars and nightclubs are common student employers in Manchester, particularly in and around the city centre. The work involves shifts including late nights and weekends - not ideal if you need study time but good money, especially on weekends. The sociability can be a plus if you enjoy the environment. Library and administrative roles through the university are available to students - these often pay better and offer more flexibility around academic schedules. Campus jobs particularly work well because you're already on campus for lectures.

Tutoring, delivery driving, and freelance work online are alternatives if you want more flexibility. Tutoring pays well but requires subject expertise. Delivery takes some time to set up but offers genuine flexibility - you work when suits you. Freelance work is harder to find consistently but can be less scheduled than regular jobs. Most students work part-time at some point; start by asking friends where they work and if places are hiring. Word-of-mouth is often better than job boards.
