Guide

Tennis in Manchester runs from completely free park courts to one of the most significant clubs in the north of England. At the accessible end, the LTA’s parks programme has reopened and improved courts in green spaces including Platt Fields in Fallowfield and Heaton Park, many of them free or low-cost to book through an app – the easiest possible way to get a game without joining anything. These have brought a lot of people back to the sport.

At the other end, the Northern Lawn Tennis Club in West Didsbury is one of England’s premier tennis venues, with a long history of hosting professional tournaments and a full membership offering grass, clay and hard courts plus coaching. There are established member clubs across the suburbs too – Didsbury, Chorlton and the south Manchester belt are particularly well served – offering social and competitive play, leagues and junior pathways.

For a casual hit, grab a park court with a friend. To play regularly and improve, a club gives you coaching, opponents matched to your level, and league tennis. Manchester’s mix of free public courts and strong clubs makes it one of the easier cities to pick the sport up in.
