Padel in Manchester: Where to Play

Padel has gone from almost unknown to the fastest-growing sport in the UK in a few years, and Manchester has dedicated venues now open for court hire and lessons.

Padel has been the most talked-about participation sport in the UK between 2023 and 2025, and the growth is real rather than hype – court numbers are increasing faster than any other racket sport and the demographic is broad. The game is played on an enclosed court roughly a third the size of a tennis court, surrounded by glass and metal mesh walls that are part of play: the ball can come off the back wall or side walls and remain in play, which creates a completely different tactical game from tennis. The court size and slower ball speed make it far more accessible to beginners than tennis – most people can sustain a rally within a few minutes of picking up a padel racket, which is a significant part of its appeal. Manchester has seen dedicated padel venues open across the city, with purpose-built glass-and-mesh courts available for public hire by the hour.

The crossover from tennis and squash is obvious: a lot of padel players come from those sports, drawn by the enclosed court format and the social doubles emphasis (padel is almost always played four-player). But the sport also attracts people with no racket sports background at all, because the learning curve is genuinely shallow at recreational level. Padel England has grown quickly as a governing body and its club finder covers Manchester-area venues. Introductory lessons are available at most venues and worth doing for the serve alone – the underarm serve is specific to padel and the rules around wall play take a session to absorb properly. Court hire books up quickly at peak times, so booking ahead via the venue app is the practical norm.
