Woodbank parkrun: Stockport Course Guide

Not one for an easy PB. Woodbank in Stockport is one of the more challenging, hilly parkruns in Greater Manchester - and all the more satisfying for it.

Woodbank parkrun, held every Saturday at 9am in Woodbank Memorial Park in Stockport, has a reputation as one of the tougher events in Greater Manchester. The course uses the park’s wooded, undulating terrain, with climbs that make it a genuine challenge rather than a flat time-trial – the kind of course that runners either love for the effort or save for when they fancy hills rather than a PB attempt. The reward is a varied, attractive route through mature parkland away from the roads.

The park is in the Offerton area of Stockport, with parking available and bus access from Stockport town centre, which is itself a short train hop from Manchester Piccadilly (around ten minutes). Facilities are more limited than the big city-centre events, so plan refreshments around Stockport town, which has a fast-improving food and coffee scene. As with every parkrun it is free, weekly and run by volunteers – register online, bring your barcode, and embrace the hills. If you train here regularly, flatter courses will feel a lot easier afterwards.
