The five-a-side leagues actually worth joining this summer

A guide to finding a casual five-a-side football league in Manchester that matches your level and schedule.

Five-a-side football

Five-a-side leagues in Manchester range from highly competitive Monday night divisions to relaxed Wednesday fixtures where people bring mates without formal teams. The key difference is how fussy they are about registration - some require squad rosters and checks, others let you sign up as a player and join whoever has space that week. Competitive leagues usually want commitment and consistent attendance. Casual leagues suit people who play when they're free.

Facilities across the city vary in standard and price. Indoor astroturf courts in the city centre tend to be pricier and attract faster-paced games. Outdoor pitches across North and East Manchester are cheaper and draw a broader mix of abilities. Most leagues run fixed schedules - autumn leagues typically start August and run through October, winter leagues December through March, and summer leagues are flexible.

The easiest way in is asking at a pitch you know is being used, or checking local Facebook groups where many leagues advertise. Most need at least a week's notice to add a player mid-season. If you're finding your level for the first time, playing three or four casual games before committing to a full season helps you gauge what suits you.
