Stockport Town FC: The County’s Local Alternative
Not to be confused with Stockport County - Stockport Town FC emerged in 2013 and have built a solid presence in the North West Counties League at Lambeth Grove Stadium.
Stockport Town FC were formed in 2013 and are an entirely separate club from Stockport County, the much larger outfit with the famous ground at Edgeley Park. Town emerged partly as a grassroots alternative during a period when County were struggling through their own difficulties, and have carved out their own identity in the North West Counties League. Lambeth Grove Stadium gives the club a proper home base and the level of competition in the NWCL is higher than the casual observer might assume – this is the bottom rung of the football pyramid, where promotion matters and results are taken seriously.
In a little over a decade, Stockport Town have built from scratch to become a functioning non-league club with a place in the local football landscape. For supporters who want to follow Stockport football at a community scale – short distances, affordable admission, a team whose players are from around the area – Town are a genuine option alongside or instead of following County.
