Salford Harriers and Athletic Club: Over a Century of Running
Salford Harriers and Athletic Club were founded in 1884 - one of the oldest running clubs in the North West, competitive across track, road and cross-country with a proud women's section.
Salford Harriers and Athletic Club were formed in 1884, which places them among the older running clubs in the North West and indeed the country. Over 140 years of club athletics is a long time – the club has competed through the amateur era, the professionalisation of the sport, the road running boom of the 1980s, and the parkrun era of the 2010s, and it remains a competitive outfit throughout. The women’s section is particularly strong, with a consistent record in Northern cross-country and road events that reflects the depth of talent the club attracts from across the Salford area.
The club competes across the full range of Northern Athletics events – track and field in the summer, cross-country in the winter, road relays and individual road races through the year. Salford has a proud running tradition that pre-dates the club itself, tied to the industrial character of the city and the open land of Chat Moss and the Mersey valley on its edges. New members are welcomed across age groups, and the club coaches athletes from beginners to those chasing serious competitive performances. Contact details and training schedules are on the club website, with sessions running most evenings and at weekends throughout the year.
