Guide

Maine Road FC are a non-league club based at Brantingham Road in Chorlton, south Manchester, and they carry one of the most evocative names in the city’s football history. Maine Road was Manchester City’s home in Moss Side from 1923 until the move to the Etihad in 2003, and for generations of Mancunians it was the centre of the football world. The amateur club that bears the name is a separate, grassroots affair, but the link to City’s past is real and proudly held.

The club competes in the regional non-league system and runs the usual base of senior and junior football that keeps the grassroots alive. Chorlton is one of south Manchester’s most characterful neighbourhoods, and a club like this is woven into local life in a way the big professional sides cannot be.

Chorlton is well connected by Metrolink and bus. For local football with a thread back to one of English football’s great lost grounds, Maine Road FC is a quietly poignant watch.
