You’ve landed at Manchester Airport. You need to get into the city centre. Here’s every option, what it costs, how long it takes, and — crucially — what actually works when your flight lands at stupid o’clock.
By Train — The Best Option for Most People
The train is the fastest and most reliable way to get from the airport to central Manchester. Manchester Airport station is connected to Terminals 1 and 2 by a covered walkway. From Terminal 3, follow signs to the skylink — it’s a 5-10 minute walk.
To Manchester Piccadilly: Direct trains roughly every 10-15 minutes. Journey time 15-20 minutes. Cost: around £5.50 single, £7.20 off-peak return. Buy tickets from the machines at the station or use a contactless card — it’ll charge the right fare.
To Manchester Oxford Road: Same trains, one stop before Piccadilly. Useful if you’re heading to Deansgate or the university area.
To Manchester Victoria: Some services run direct, others require a change at Piccadilly. Check before you board. Victoria is useful for the Arena, the Printworks, and the northern end of the city centre.
First train: Around 5:15am to Piccadilly.
Last train: Around 11:00pm to Piccadilly. This is the problem. If your flight lands after 10pm and you still need to clear baggage reclaim, you’ll likely miss the last train. Check National Rail for exact times on your travel date.
Tip: If you’re arriving during rush hour (7:30-9:30am or 4:30-6:30pm), trains can be rammed. Standing room only. The 15-minute journey is manageable standing up, but don’t expect a seat.
By Tram (Metrolink) — Cheap but Slow
The Metrolink tram runs from Manchester Airport to the city centre. The stop is between Terminals 1 and 2.
To Piccadilly Gardens / St Peter’s Square: About 45-50 minutes. Cost: around £4.60 single.
The tram is cheaper than the train but takes three times as long because it stops everywhere along the way — Wythenshawe, Sale, Stretford, Old Trafford, Cornbrook, then into the city centre. It’s fine if you’re not in a hurry or if you’re staying somewhere along the route (Didsbury is not on the airport tram line though — that’s a common mistake).
First tram: Around 5:15am.
Last tram: Around 11:15pm from the airport. Slightly later than the last train, but not by much.
Tip: The tram does NOT go to the Northern Quarter directly. Get off at Piccadilly Gardens or Market Street and walk. And the tram doesn’t go to Didsbury from the airport — you’d need to change at Cornbrook or St Werburgh’s Road, which is a faff with luggage.
By Bus — Budget Option
43 Bus
The 43 runs from the airport through Wythenshawe, Northenden, Didsbury, Fallowfield, Rusholme, and into the city centre (Piccadilly Gardens). Takes about 50-70 minutes depending on traffic. Costs around £2 single (the £2 bus fare cap). This is the cheapest option and useful if you’re staying in south Manchester along the route.
Night Bus
The 43 doesn’t run all night. If you land after midnight, the bus is not an option.
National Express / FlixBus
Coach services run from the airport to Manchester Coach Station (Chorlton Street, near Piccadilly). Useful if you’re connecting to another city, less useful for just getting into central Manchester. Pre-book for the best prices.
By Taxi — The Door-to-Door Option
The official taxi rank is outside each terminal’s arrivals hall. Follow the signs — they’re well marked.
Cost to city centre: £25-35 by Hackney cab (metered). The exact fare depends on traffic and time of day. Late at night, expect the higher end.
Private hire (pre-booked): Street Cars and Arrow Cars are the main Manchester firms. Pre-book and the price is fixed — usually £20-30 to the city centre. You need to pre-book private hire vehicles. You can’t just jump in one at the rank.
Uber/Bolt: Both work from the airport. Order through the app and follow the pickup instructions — there are designated rideshare pickup points at each terminal. Usually £15-25 to the city centre. Surge pricing applies at peak times and when lots of flights land simultaneously. At 2am with no surge, it can be surprisingly cheap.
Tip: Ignore anyone who approaches you in the arrivals hall offering a taxi. Licensed Hackney cabs are at the official rank. Everything else is potentially unlicensed and uninsured.
Landing After Midnight — The Honest Truth
This is where it gets awkward. Your flight lands at midnight or later. The trains have stopped. The trams have stopped. The buses have stopped. Your options:
- Uber/Bolt — The most common late-night option. Order from arrivals, wait 5-10 minutes. £15-30 depending on surge. This is what most people do.
- Pre-booked private hire — Book Street Cars or Arrow Cars before you fly. Give them your flight number and landing time. They’ll track the flight and be waiting. Costs around £25-30. Reliable and you won’t be scrambling with the app at 1am.
- Official taxi rank — There are usually Hackney cabs waiting even at 1-2am. Metered fare, £30-35 to the city centre. More expensive but no app needed and you can just get in.
- Stay at the airport — If your onward plans aren’t until morning, the Premier Inn at the airport (in the T2 arrivals area) and the Hilton Garden Inn are right there. The Clayton Hotel is a shuttle ride away. Not cheap (£80-150) but less hassle than a 2am taxi if you’re just going to sleep anyway.
What definitely doesn’t work at 1am: trains, trams, buses, and walking (the airport is 9 miles from the city centre with no pavement for most of it).
Terminal by Terminal
Terminal 1
The train station is connected via covered walkway through Terminal 2 — follow signs, 5-minute walk. Tram stop is the same direction. Taxi rank is directly outside arrivals. Most domestic and European flights.
Terminal 2
Closest to the train station and tram stop — 2-minute walk from arrivals. The newest terminal after the major refurb. Long-haul flights (Emirates, Qatar, Singapore, Virgin). Taxi rank outside arrivals.
Terminal 3
The awkward one. Furthest from the train station. Follow signs to the skylink between terminals — it’s a 10-minute walk to the station. Taxi rank outside arrivals is fine. Used mainly by Jet2 and some charter flights.

The Verdict
Train if you’re arriving between 5am and 10pm. Pre-booked private hire or Uber for late arrivals. The tram is fine if you’re in no rush and staying along its route. The bus is fine if you’re on a budget and your flight lands before 11pm. Don’t walk it. Don’t try to cycle it. And don’t accept lifts from random blokes in the arrivals hall. That’s it.
