Best Bookshops in Manchester

Manchester has always had readers. The city produced authors, philosophers, and thinkers. That culture still matters. Here’s where to find books.

Waterstones Deansgate

The flagship Waterstones on Deansgate is four floors. Fiction, non-fiction, graphic novels, children’s books. There’s a café on one floor. Staff actually know books here. It’s the place to start if you want selection.

Grindhouse Books

Grindhouse is in the Northern Quarter. They specialise in comics, graphic novels, and alternative comics. If you’re into underground comics or indie comics, this is essential. The owner knows the stock inside out.

Waterstones Manchester Market Street

Smaller than Deansgate but still solid. Fiction focus. Good for popping in if you’re in the city centre and want to browse.

The Northern Quarter Independent Shops

The Northern Quarter has several small independent bookshops. They’re harder to find than a chain, but that’s part of why they’re worth going. Postcards, zines, art books, and small press publications. Each has a personality. Walk around and find them.

Moss Side Libraries

If you just want to borrow books instead of buying, Manchester Libraries are free and well-stocked. Moss Side Library, Central Library, and branch libraries across the city have fiction and non-fiction. In a city where books are expensive, this matters.

Manchester Press

Manchester has small presses that publish local authors. Look for these in independent bookshops. Books about Manchester, by people from Manchester, sold by people who care about Manchester. That’s worth something.
