Best areas for students
Comparing the main student neighbourhoods to help first years choose where to live.
Most first-year students live in halls on or near campus - Oxford Road has halls, but so do other areas. The choice of where to live becomes real from second year onwards when you're renting privately. The main student neighbourhoods in south Manchester - Fallowfield, Rusholme, Withington - offer different balances of price, proximity to campus, and social atmosphere. Fallowfield is the classic choice with the strongest student culture and cheapest rent. Rusholme offers value, particularly if you cook and take advantage of the food shops. Withington is quieter and slightly pricier. Hulme is closer to the city centre if that matters to you.
The choice depends on your priorities. If you want the fullest student social life, Fallowfield. If you're budget-conscious and cook, Rusholme. If you want a bit more peace and don't mind slightly higher rent, Withington. If you need to be close to the city centre, Hulme. For Salford University students, Salford is the obvious choice - the accommodation is newer and cheaper than the Manchester student neighbourhoods, though the area feels less integrated into the city.
Talk to people in your course about where they live - recommendations from current students are better than any guide. Most people end up in Fallowfield at some point; it's not because it's objectively the best, but because it has the most student accommodation, the cheapest rent, and the established peer network. Where you live matters less than you think - what matters more is who you live with and how you manage your time between campus and the neighbourhood.
