Abbey Hey FC: East Manchester’s Community Club
Abbey Hey FC have been part of Gorton since 1902 - a small, tight-knit community football club in east Manchester with genuine roots in the area.

Abbey Hey FC are one of those clubs that exist because a community wanted them to. Founded in 1902 in Gorton, one of east Manchester’s most established working-class neighbourhoods, the club has continued at the lower end of the non-league pyramid without the profile of larger neighbours but with a genuine local identity that bigger clubs sometimes lose. The Garwood Arena is a compact ground suited to the level – close to the pitch, unpretentious, the kind of place where you’ll recognise faces after a few visits.
The North West Counties League is the entry point to the pyramid for serious amateur and semi-professional clubs. Abbey Hey compete against clubs from across Lancashire and Cheshire as well as Greater Manchester, and the standard is higher than casual observers might expect. For anyone living in east Manchester and looking for local football to follow, Abbey Hey offer something the major clubs cannot – the sense that the team on the pitch is from the same streets as the people watching. Junior sections run through the season and the club welcomes new players and supporters.
