About ARAWAK Walton Centre

The ARAWAK Walton Centre on Carmoor Road in Moss Side has been a hub for Manchester’s Caribbean and African communities for decades. Named after the Arawak people of the Caribbean, the centre provides a physical base for community organisations, cultural activities, and local services in one of Manchester’s most historically significant neighbourhoods for Black British life.

The centre hosts a range of activities — community meetings, cultural events, dance and fitness classes, youth programmes, and celebrations. Various organisations use the building as a base, and rooms are available for hire. It’s the kind of place where you’ll find a dominos group in one room and a community health workshop in another.

Moss Side’s Caribbean community has shaped Manchester profoundly — from the carnival that’s run since 1972 to the music, food, and culture that’s woven into the city. The ARAWAK Walton Centre is one of the places that keeps those connections alive and provides space for the community to organise, celebrate, and support each other.

Find the centre at ARAWAK Walton Centre, Carmoor Road, Moss Side, Manchester M14 4PA. Opening hours depend on what’s running, so check ahead if you’re planning to visit. If you’re involved in community work in the area, this is a venue worth knowing about.
