Spinningfields was a car park until the early 2000s. Now it's where the lawyers, fund managers and tech founders of Manchester gather. The Avenue is the main artery: 20 Stories rooftop bar on the 19th floor with panoramic views over Deansgate and the Beetham Tower, Australasia tucked underground for Pacific-rim tasting menus, Manchester House for precision fine dining, The Ivy for the out-of-towners. Hawksmoor on Deansgate runs the best steak in the city; the Sunday roast alone justifies the walk from Piccadilly. John Rylands Library sits on the southern edge, a neo-Gothic wonder that holds one of the world's great medieval book collections. Free to enter. Spinningfields is also where Manchester's financial services actually operate. Allied London developed the estate, HSBC and RBS have their Northern HQs here, and most of the Manchester Magic Circle law firms are within 500 metres of each other. Come for an expense-account lunch at The Oast House, stay for a drink at The Alchemist's glowing bar.
