Fallowfield

South Manchester's classic student neighbourhood with shared houses, corner shops and student pubs.

Fallowfield student neighbourhood

Fallowfield is where most Manchester students end up after first year. The streets around Platt Lane and Moseley Road are lined with shared student houses, many carved up into bedsits. The area has that lived-in student feel - chip papers on the pavement on Friday nights, postcards of bands in cafe windows, the smell of cooking from ten different kitchens.

The local shops are built for student budgets. Fallowfield convenience stores stay open late, supermarkets are within walking distance, and there are small Turkish and Asian delis that undercut the chains. The pubs know their crowd - you'll see the same faces on a Tuesday afternoon as on a Saturday night. It's the kind of place where a bad landlord gets known quickly and a good one gets recommended across friendship groups.

Travel in and out is straightforward. Buses run regularly to the city centre and campus. You can walk to Oxford Road in about 20 minutes if you're heading to lectures. In winter the streets get quiet by 9pm; in term time they're busy enough that you won't feel isolated. Parking is theoretically available but practically a nightmare - most students accept they won't have a car here.
