Altrincham

Altrincham is a town in the borough of Trafford, around eight miles southwest of central Manchester. Its identity begins with the market: Altrincham was established as a market town by charter in 1290, and Market Place remains the clearest link between the medieval settlement and the modern centre. The Grade II-listed Market House, built in the nineteenth century, now houses independent food and drink traders while the surrounding outdoor market continues the town's long commercial role.

The centre is compact enough to explore on foot. Market Place connects with George Street, Stamford New Road and the smaller public space at Goose Green. The old street pattern survives alongside later shops, civic buildings and residential streets leading toward Bowdon and Hale. This mix gives Altrincham a different rhythm from central Manchester: it functions as a working town centre for nearby communities as well as a food and shopping destination.

The current public realm reflects a deliberate recovery. In 2012 George Street, the spine of the medieval town, was placed on Historic England's register of Conservation Areas at Risk because of empty shops and the condition of the streets. Trafford Council and Altrincham Forward responded with a roughly £6 million regeneration programme. New stone paving, street trees, seating and pedestrian-focused spaces reconnected George Street, Goose Green and the lower market, placing the Market House back at the centre of activity. Historic England later used Altrincham as a case study in how street design and heritage could support town-centre renewal.

Altrincham Interchange makes the centre unusually well connected for an outer Greater Manchester town. It combines tram, rail and bus services in one place and includes a cycle hub. The Metrolink stop is in Zone 4 and connects with routes toward Manchester, while rail and bus services provide alternatives across Trafford, Stockport and Cheshire. That transport access is part of Altrincham's long-standing commuter role, but the town is most useful to visitors as a destination in its own right: start around Market Place, continue through George Street and Goose Green, and treat nearby estates and villages as separate places rather than folding all of south Trafford into one guide.
