Guide

Salford Watersports Centre on the Quays is the most accessible watersports facility in the city – well-equipped, centrally located relative to Greater Manchester, and running kayak, canoe and paddleboard sessions for beginners through to improvers. The Quays location means the water is calm and sheltered, which makes it a good learning environment before progressing to moving water or open reservoirs. Taster sessions are available without any prior experience, and the centre works with schools, community groups and individuals. The MediaCityUK backdrop is not exactly wilderness, but as an urban watersport venue it functions well and is easy to get to by tram.

For open water, Sale Water Park in Altrincham is the main freshwater venue within Greater Manchester – used heavily by triathletes for swim training but also by canoeists and paddleboarders who want space and a more natural setting. Further afield, Hollingworth Lake near Littleborough has a sailing club and outdoor watersports centre that covers dinghy sailing, kayaking and windsurfing. Canal stand-up paddleboarding has grown noticeably in Manchester, with hire operations and guided tours running on the Bridgewater and Rochdale canals in the warmer months – a flat-water environment that is genuinely pleasant on a calm evening. British Canoeing and the RYA both maintain club finders that will show you affiliated clubs offering taster and beginner sessions across the region.
